Mauricio Pochettino, the coach of Chelsea, expressed his satisfaction with the Blues’ performance in his first competitive encounter in charge – a 1-1 draw against Liverpool at home in the Premier League on Sunday – and hinted at potential additions to the squad.

Pochettino, Chelsea’s third permanent manager in a year, claimed his team’s fresh look, which included four debutants in the starting 11, started to gain confidence after the opening 20 minutes of the match at Stamford Bridge were difficult.

“I’m so pleased with the performance overall,” the Argentine told reporters.

“I think we deserved to win because we conceded only one shot on target against a team like Liverpool … It’s only the start, it’s only the beginning.”

Pochettino expressed satisfaction with how his team responded after falling down to a Luiz Diaz goal in the 18th minute.

Axel Disasi, a rookie defender, levelled in the 37th minute, and Chelsea dominated for the whole of the second half.

“The team was there when some challenging moments appeared, and the crowd was fantastic,” he continued.

Despite Liverpool confirming last week that they had a deal with Brighton & Hove Albion to sign Moises Caicedo, Chelsea, whose new American owners spent over £600 million last season only for the team to finish 12th, continue to be connected with the midfielder.

Pochettino, who previously led Chelsea’s London rivals Tottenham Hotspur but who had a rousing welcome from Blues supporters before the game and an applause after it, predicted that more new players would arrive without naming any specific individuals.

“We will undoubtedly strengthen the squad. Finding the appropriate player with the correct profile will help us put together a team that may be stronger.

When asked about custodian Kepa Arrizabalaga’s absence from the team on Sunday amid rumours that he will join Real Madrid, Pochettino responded that the Spaniard was considering “different situations, different possibilities.”

“For us, the decision is to have all the players who are committed and thinking to be in Chelsea for the season, and that is why he wasn’t in the squad,” he said.

Reece James, the new club captain for Chelsea, was substituted late in the game, according to Pochettino, because he was fatigued and needed to be handled gently after last season’s injuries.
