Top News Messi 2022 World Cup Jerseys To Be Sold For $7.8m

During Argentina’s victorious 2022 World Cup campaign, six shirts worn by Lionel Messi sold for $7.8 million at an auction held in New York.

According to auction house Sotheby’s, the set of shirts sold for a record amount, shattering the previous record for the sale of a player-related item. This makes the set of shirts the most valuable athletic memorabilia up for auction this year.

Included in the collection was the shirt that Messi wore in the first half of the Qatari final versus France.

These historic shirts are not only a tangible reminder of one of the most important moments in the history of sports but are principally connected to the pinnacle moment in the career of the most decorated football player in history,” Sotheby’s Head of Modern Collectables Brahm Wachter said.

The record for the highest price paid for a game-worn sports memorabilia item is Michael Jordan’s jersey from the 1998 NBA Final opening game, which sold for $10.1 million last year.
