COSAFA COSAFA Cup: South Africa Gets First Win Against Botswana

Host South Africa came from a goal down to defeat 10-man Botswana 2-1 and kept their prospects of making the semifinals alive at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban on Saturday in the Cosafa Cup.

The group is still very much alive going into Tuesday’s last round of games thanks to Eswatini’s 2-1 victory over Namibia in the second pool encounter.

With four points, South Africa is in first place in the group and will next face Eswatini. They both have three points, one more than Botswana. The one in Namibia.

There is limited room for error because only the best team from each pool advances automatically to the semifinals, along with the best-placed runner-up.

South Africa, a six-time champion, appeared to be in trouble when they fell behind 1-0 just after the hour mark.

Thatayaone Kgamanyane caught a long ball over the top as it was allowed to bounce, and he had the easy chore of side-footing past a stuck Jethren Barr in the Bafana Bafana goal.

However, the host team immediately struck again, dealing Botswana a double blow.

Victor Letsoalo was deemed to have been brought down in the box by Tebogo Kopelang, and the home team was not only given a penalty but also a red card. No errors were committed by Iqraam Rayners from the penalty spot.

Shaune Mogaila received the ball on the right side of the box, and his low shot beat Lesenya Malapela in the Zebras goal at his near post to give Bafana the lead with their third goal in five crazy minutes.
