Nigeria FIFA 2026 WCQ:Awoniyi Out Of Zimbabwe Game After Groin Injury

After suffering a groin injury while representing Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier, Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi was forced to return to his club.

In Thursday’s 1-1 tie in Uyo against Lesotho, Awoniyi got off to a start; however, in the 59th minute, Nice attacker Terem Moffi took his place.

Because the home team’s stadium does not match FIFA requirements, he will be unable to participate in Sunday’s qualifier against Zimbabwe, which will take place in Rwanda.

When the rest of the team departs for Rwanda on Friday, Awoniyi is scheduled to return to England for additional medical examinations, according to officials.

Nigeria has already lost three of its best forwards—Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, and Samuel Chukwueze—to injuries.
